Peugeot 508 SW – the stylish estate moves upmarket
Added: 19 July 2019
The SUV is undoubtedly top of the automotive class – having swiftly overtaken more traditional segments of the market with ease.
However, Peugeot’s new upmarket 508 SW is proving that the allure of the estate still holds appeal for the motoring public, according to Auto Express.
Many are drawn to the SUV for its over-the-hedge views and fusion of urban chic and off-road style. But when it comes to practicality and boot space, most estates leave all but the largest SUVs trailing in their wake.
Sean Carson, Chief reviewer of Auto Express, put the 508 SW 1.5 BlueHD1 130 EAT8 GT Line through its paces and concluded its advances in styling and design have been transformative.
Based on Peugeot’s EMP2 platform, it is up to 70kg lighter than its predecessor. The GT Line offers a 1.5 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine which produces 129 bhp, with a plug-in hybrid on the horizon.
The handling is described as relaxed with the sophisticated suspension striking a good balance between comfort and cornering ability.
The estate though is all about practicality and as such the 508 offers a 530-litre load bay and plenty of leg room – although the sweeping roofline, which contributes towards its sleek look, does restrict rear head room.
Running costs will score highly with business users as the Peugeot’s low 104g/km C02 emissions mean it will be cheaper for higher-rate earners, with an annual benefit-in-Kind (BiK) cost of £3,737 because it sits in the 31 percent BiK band.
Lane-keep assist, autonomous braking and full LED headlights, plus six airbags, and blind spot assist are all standard, earning it a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
The level of tech is excellent with the 508 SW available in three trims, Active, Allure and GT Line.
