The Role of a Vehicle Service Technician:

Service Technicians are trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features. The role will vary by employer based upon the specific needs of the location, but the position typically involves:

  • Servicing vehicles by carrying out check and maintenance
  • Repairing and replacing faulty parts
  • Developing an understanding of workshop equipment
  • Advising the Service Receptionists about required repairs
  • Producing time estimates
  • Maintaining repair and service records

Working Week

A typical working week could be 40 hours Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.30pm. However, each of our Dealers will have different requirements.

All learners will be required to work the minimum apprenticeship duration of 30 hours per week. At least 20% of your working hours will be allocated to ‘off-the-job’ training. You will learn more about the working hours during the recruitment process.

Your Development and Future Prospects

The Programme lasts for at least 36 months (3 years) and you’ll achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

We will support you to gain your Functional Skills if you require them in Maths and English.

All of our Apprentices are employed through the Dealer Network and attend week long block training at our state of the art Training Centre in Coventry.

Block training is complemented by a combination of regular coaching visits from one of our experienced Coaches as well as Virtual Classroom sessions and E-Learning modules.

Your development is supported through your Apprenticeship journey, with your learning focused towards achieving a qualification recognised across the motor industry. This will provide the foundation to develop your career, as there are lots of opportunities within our expanding Dealer Network to progress and move into new roles once you’ve successfully completed the programme.

Qualification: Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle)

Duration: 36 months

Salary: Our employers determine the level of pay our learners receive. All employers are required to pay, at least, The National Apprenticeship Wage of £4.81 per hour.

Age: 16+

Qualifications: GCSE (or equivalent) Level 4 plus in Maths and English

Predicted grades are accepted

Essential Skills (Wales)

Functional Skills Level 2

Core Skills (Scotland)

In Scotland, applicants must have or be predicted to achieve National 4 or above in English and Maths and either a Science or Technical subject. Standard Grades 1-4 and Intermediates are also accepted.
